1 September 1813 – Battle of Bayreuth

General Wittgenstein has concentrated his 2nd, 3rd and 4th corps in a central position to hold the river Saale and also defend Bayreuth and Waldershot.

Marshal Davout has crossed the river south of Bayreuth and is now determined to move north and take the city, which is the objective of this campaign.  He has ordered 6th and 14th corps to attack from the south, and 5th corps from the west.

French – 48000 infantry, 3000 cavalry, 90 guns
Prussian – 46000 infantry, 3000 cavalry, 87 guns

Conclusion
With five brigades in rout, and defeated on all three fronts, Wittgenstein orders a general retreat
