Davout orders 2nd corps to occupy
Eisleben, and 14th corps to seize the road bridge from Eisleben to
Halle.
He expects the Russians to counter attack on the
right bank of the Saale. So 5th
and 6th corps are ordered to hold their position
However Wittgenstein does not attack
He is thrown of balance by the loss of Eisleben and
the rout of 2nd corps.
He orders 1st corps, his reserve, to
cross the river Saale and move to Gerbstedt.
This will allow 2nd corps to rally there
and secure a foothold on the west bank of the river.
Instead of attacking on the east bank, he orders 3rd
and 4th corps to retreat behind Halle and Landsberg. He wants to avoid a battle until he can open
communication between the two wings of his army.
