28 May 1813 – Battle of Kufstein

Both armies have considerable battle casualties

In addition the Austrians have long lines of supply

This will be the last chance for Schwartzenberg to win the campaign

 

2rd Austrian army are ordered to attack the regional capital of Kufstein

8th Bavarian army have orders to hold the city

The city has a garrison of 2 militia brigades

 

Bavarian – 10 infantry brigades, 2 cavalry brigade, 2 corps artillery

Austrian – 8 infantry brigades, 2 cavalry brigade, 2 corps artillery

8th Bavarian army are deployed in front of the city of Kufstein

The city has a garrison of two militia brigades

12th corps have sent one infantry and one cavalry brigade over to the left bank

 

2nd Austrian army will arrive on the bottom of the table at the start of move 1

Bavarians lose cavalry melee but hit infantry brigade with artillery fire

11th corps artillery hit leading infantry brigade and cause 10% casualties

Reserve cavalry charge Austrian hussars, lose melee and rout with 20% casualties

12th corps concentrate all of corps on the right bank of the river

 

Austrians win cavalry melee, but lose infantry casualties

3rd corps suffer first casualties, disperse infantry into bark and onto hill

Reserve counter charge Bavarian cavalry, melee is draw with 10% casualties  

4th corps dragoons charge and rout Bavarian cavalry in melee

Bavarians retreat towards Kufstein

11th corps hold their position and exchange close range fire with Austrian gunners

Austrians continue to advance

3rd corps send infantry along hill to outflank Bavarian hill

Reserve swing right to support 3rd corps and force 11th corps to retreat

4th corps advance in pursuit of retreating Baden corps

Bavarians continue to retreat towards Kufstein

11t h corps artillery rout Austrian gunners with 20% casualties

Reserve continues to retreat towards city

12th corps redeploy to the left of Kufstein

 

Austrians advance to attack Bavarian held hill

3rd corps gunners rout with 20% casualties, infantry advance towards hill

Reserve in position to attack hill

4th corps redeploy within artillery range of Baden corps

Bavarians continue to retreat and rout

11th corps fighting retreat off hill towards town

Reserve move into position in front of Kufstein

12th corps have three brigades in rout and remainder shaken

 

Austrians press home their attack

3rd corps clear of farm and advance towards Kufstein between hill and road

Reserve have stormed the hill and pushing 11th corps back

4th corps lose cavalry melee, but infantry and artillery press forward

Bavarians continue to rout

11th corps one square with gunners inside continue to retreat, three brigades rout

Reserve two infantry brigades deploy to right of Kufstein

12th corps artillery and cavalry rally to left of Kufstein, three brigades rout

 

Austrians continue to advance

3rd corps advance on right between road and hill

Continue to attack Bavarians on hill

4th corps continue to attack Badens to left of Kufstein

All brigades of Bavarian and Baden corps in rout or shaken

11th corps has four brigades in rout and two shaken

Reserve has two brigades shaken

12th corps has five brigades in rout and one shaken

Both brigades in garrison are shaken

 

Austrains fail to take Kufstein

2nd corps take hill and rout  Bavarians, three out of six brigades shaken

Reserve break and rout Bavarian reserve, both infantry brigades shaken

4th corps attack town but fail to take any part of Kufstein

 

Summary

Nine Bavarian and Baden brigades in rout

Remainder all shaken, including garrison of Kufstein

However they still hold the town at nightfall, and can claim a victory

 

The French have lost 14 infantry, 5 cavalry and 2 artillery casualties (6300 men)

The Austrians have lost 9 infantry.3 cavalry and 2 artillery casualties (4100 men)
