22 April 1813 – North Germany

Napoleon expected that the Prussians would hold their position just west of the river Saale, and ordered his four corps to advance to pin them there.

However Blucher wanted to advance to gain sufficient ground to allow him to manoeuvre during the coming campaign.

The result was three cavalry melee in the area between the two armies.
In the north the Prussians lost the melee and retreated with 100 casualties
In the centre it was a draw and both brigades retreated without casualties
In the south the Polish lancers lost and retreated with 100 casualties

The two armies are now in contact.
