23 August 1813 – Leon Campaign – Day 14


Soult orders all four corps to attack Sanabria
His army is now on supplies, and has considerable campaign casualties
However he is determined to attack before Wellington can recover from his defeat at Leon

Wellington has rallied, reorganised and resupplied his army
But he still has all of his campaign casualties, including those from Leon
Despite this he is determined to prevent any further French advance
He orders his army to hold his current position just south of Sanabria
He also orders 17 and 18 infantry brigades to occupy Trabazos and Zamora
         
Wellington suffers a crushing defeat at the battle of Sanabria
By late afternoon two of his four corps are broken and in rout
At nightfall he orders all of his army to retreat to Zamora

The British have lost 9400 casualties and nine brigades in rout
The French have lost 4300 casualties and three brigades in rout
