Start of Campaign
The
Leon campaign was the sixth campaign phase in Northern Spain, between the
Fourth French Army commanded by Marshal Soult and the Anglo-Portuguese Army
commanded by the Duke of Wellington. It
lasted fifteen days and there were six battles. Wellington won three and Soult also won
three.
Battles Fought
The
campaign started with Wellington’s advance north to take Leon. This would allow him to reach the coast and secure
a port to shortern his lines of communications.
It
started badly with Wellington failing to take Sanabria. Soult moved south, but was defeated at
Mayorga. The British again moved north
and won the battles of Sanabria and Benevente.
Having resupplied and regrouped Wellington moved north again but lost at
Leon. Soult again orders his army to
attack, and he gains a convincing victory at the third battle of Sanabria. Wellington is forced to retreat to the river
Duero.
The
campaign ended in a convincing French victory
