10 September – Southern Spain – Day 3

Suchet orders 15^th corps to occupy Elda and 16^th corps to rest and resupply

He leads 7^th corps south towards Hellin, which he finds occupied

He halts north of Hellin until 15^th and 16^th corps are ready to support him

                                                                                     

Giron orders the Spanish Army to concentrate just north of Molina

1^st and 2^nd Corps are ordered to hold Hellin for one day

This will allow 3^rd and 4^th corps to redeploy and reorganise

He also orders new depots at Calasparra and Orihuela

When regrouped he will wait for the French to advance and attack him

9 September – Southern Spain – Day 2

16^th Italian corps enter Riopar

Spanish garrison retreat to nearby farm

3^rd Spanish corps retreat south towards Calaspara

Suchet orders 15^th Vistula corps attack Elda to secure his left flank

Joubert is determined to destroy 4^th Spanish corps and take Elda

He orders a similar attack to Harispe, infantry on the left and cavalry on the right

The Spanish offer a similar defence, artillery on their left and infantry in reserve

The Polish attack is much more aggressive than the Italians at Riopar

As a consequence they suffer heavier casualties, particular the cavalry

The lancer brigade charge the enemy guns, lose 20% casualties and rout

A second hollow victory for Suchet.   He has allowed both Spanish corps to retreat

His flanks are secure, but he is still heavily outnumbered by the Spanish army

9 September 1813 – Battle of Elda

Elda is held by 6 militia brigade

4^th Spanish corps is deployed to hold the road through the mountains

3 guerrilla band holds a farm overlooking the road

Suchet has secured his right flank by taking Riopar

He now orders 15^th Vistula corps to take Elda to secure his left flank

The Poles greatly outnumber the Spanish in and around Elda.

So a French victory is likely, but it needs to be a decisive one

Although the French took Riopar, the Spanish retreated intact

This must not be allowed to happen at Elda

French – 16000 infantry, 1900 cavalry, 30 guns

Joubert has forced the Spanish to retreat

He will claim a victory, but it is a hollow one

Longa has managed to withdraw his whole corps, including his artillery

He has suffered more casualties than the enemy

But his corps is still intact and will be able to regroup and fight again

The Poles have lost 600 casualties

The Spanish have lost 1200 casualties
