2^nd Austrian corps retreats to Traunreut after their defeat at Wassenburg

10^th Bavarian corps hold the river, reorganise and resupply

Oudinot has secured not only Rosenheim, but the whole right bank of the river Isar.

His depots are too far back, and cannot resupply his depleted corps

He needs a couple of days to reorganise his supply system and depots

The Austrian defeat at Wassenburg has put Schwartzenberg in a difficult position.

His orders are to hold the right bank of the river Isar, and in particular Rosenheim

To do so he must attack and drive the Bavarians back over the river

However three of his four corps have heavy battle casualties

1^st and 3^rd corps each have 20% casualties in their cavalry brigades

Without cavalry support any attack on Rosenheim must fail

So both armies rest, reorganise and resupply

7 October 1813 – Rosenheim Campaign – Day 5

The French supply system is still causing problems.   The dire need of 9^th and 11^th corps have been eased.  But in order to advance and complete their success the French must establish their forward bases on the right bank of the river Isar

So another day is spent redeploying their supply depots

Oudinot orders the depot at Tegensee (with two days supplies) to move to Kufstein

This requires two of his four available convoy trains

The other two move two days from Bad Tolz to Rosenheim

It is a slow business moving supplies to the front, and is delaying his offensive.

The delay is even more welcome to Schwartzenberg.   He is aware that the French must soon attack Traunstein.   His supply system is better, because he has fallen back on his main supply depot.   However his corps are in even more need of reorganisation and reinforcement.  

Schwartzenberg is aware that he must try to disrupt Bavarian preparations for the attack on Traunstein.   However only in the north does he has a slight advantage in numbers.   He orders 2^nd Corps to attack 10^th in front of Wassenburg.

Both sides suffer heavy casualties during the second battle of Wassenburg.   However at nightfall the Bavarians still hold the bridge and win the battle.

Schwartzenberg is in a desperate situation.   Having lost two battles he needs time to concentrate and regroup his army at Traunstein.  

                                              

He is aware that Oudinot has serious supply problems, and must also regroup and reinforce his corps around Rosenheim.

To disrupt Bavarian preparations he orders 2^nd corps to attack 10^th Bavarian corps in front of Wassenburg.  

Bavarian – 7600 infantry, 900 cavalry, 27 guns

Austrian – 9600 infantry, 900 cavalry, 30 guns

The Bavarians have won the battle

The Bavarians have lost 2600 casualties and one brigade in rout

The Austrians have lost 1500 casualties and two brigades in rout
