7 November 1813 – Central Germany – Day 6



Russian 3rd and 4th corps rally and resupply at Konnern
                       
French 5th and 6th corps rally and resupply at Halle and Landsberg
Wiedemar depot is moved to Landsberg

French 2nd and 14th corps attack 1st and 2nd Russian corps at Gerbstedt
The French combine their artillery to form a reserve again
Once more this proves very effective

On the right the Westphalians open the attack, supported by the artillery
They lose the initial cavalry melee, and are reduced to a series of infantry melee
The artillery are unable to support the attack and move to the left wing
The Westphalians finally win, but are too disordered to pursue

On the left 2nd Guard corps hold back until the fighting on the right is decided
When the artillery redeploy they move forward to attack
By then 2nd Russian corps have withdrawn and taken up a new position

The French claim a victory, but the battle is undecided
1st Russian corps may rally overnight and be able to resume next day
2nd Russian corps is largely intact, and the Russians still hold Gerbstedt

7 November 1813 – Battle of Gerbstedt

Wittgenstein must hold Gerbstedt to avoid losing the campaign
He has deployed his army between Gerbstedt and Konnern
They must hold the town and the bridge over the river Saale

Davout is determined to take Gernstedt and the bridge

French – 32000 infantry, 1800 cavalry, 60 guns
Russian – 35200 infantry, 1800 cavalry, 57 guns

1st Russian corps is deployed between the town and the river Saale

2nd Young Guard corps is deployed in front of the town

Davout has taken the artillery of both corps to create a reserve
He also has one infantry brigade from 2nd corps

Westphalians win infantry melee on the left
Two Russian infantry brigades, plus Cossacks, are routed
One Westphalian infantry brigade also routed

Russian cuirassiers on the right rout when charged by French cavalry
The rest of 2nd Russian corps have withdrawn between town and woods

2nd French corps advance, supported by reserve artillery
14th Westphalian corps too disorganised to pursue routed Russians

Conclusion
The battle ended in considerable confusion
1st Russian corps have lost, but retreat covered by two infantry brigades
2nd Russian corps are largely intact, and have taken up a new position

14th Westphalian corps have won their battle, but are unable to pursue
2nd French corps are intact, but too far to attack again before nightfall

The French have lost 2400 casualties and three brigades in rout
The Russians have lost 3600 casualties and five brigades in rout

6 November 1813 – Central Germany – Day 5


Wittgenstein orders 3rd and 4th corps to rally between Konnern and Radegast
Both corps are now out of supply
17 brigade to escort four days supplies from Landsberg to Radegast
1st and 2nd corps to hold Gerbstedt
He has concentrated his army, but abandoned his lines of supply
                                        
Davout orders 6th corps to take Landsberg, they are now out of supply
5th corps to occupy Halle and secure the Russian depot
He moves his HQ west of the river
2nd and 14th corps move towards Gerbstedt
The depot at Schraplau moves to Eisleben
He is now in position to attack Gerbstedt with 2nd and 14th corps
