3 August 1813 - Nuremberg Campaign - Day 2

11^th Bavarian corps is holding the town of Wendelstein

9^th Bavarian corps has been ordered to support them, but will not arrive until 1300

Schwartzenberg orders 4^th Austrian corps to attack the town

3^rd Austrian corps are ordered to delay the approach of 9^th Bavarian corps

3^rd corps artillery support the attack on the town

The battle opens with a cavalry melee between 11^th Bavarian and 4^th Austrian corps

The Austrians win the melee, and drive the gunners to seek shelter in the town

The Austrian artillery can then deploy within short range of the town

By 1200 the garrison have suffered heavy casualties and are shaken

An attack by two Austrian infantry brigades secures the town

Meanwhile 9^th Bavarian corps are marching to support the garrison

Their cavalry engage 3^rd Austrian cavalry, but lose the melee and retire shaken

This delays the deployment of the Bavarians and results in their defeat

With the loss of the town Oudinot orders a general retreat, covered by 9^th corps
