They are to deter minor attempts to cross the river

His main concern is to protect Bayreuth
He must also protect his supply lines running north through Kulmbach

Davout has deployed his army along the left bank of the river Saale

Aware of the Russian concern for their northern flank, he opts to attack in the south
2nd and 5th corps are ordered to pin the Russian army between Kulmbach and Bayreuth.

6th corps will attack across the river and pin 4th Russian corps
14th corps will cross further south and support 6th corps.
