14 March 1813 – Battle of Augsburg

Background to battle
Two French corps attack Augsburg to raise the siege
There is a third French corps in the city
Two Austrian corps are imposing the siege
Both armies are suffering casualties from the recent fighting
The French have one routed and two shaken brigades
All will have to rally to take part in the battle
Due to these casualties and morale both armies are very fragile
If all brigades rally the numbers taking part will be
French – 26400 infantry, 3000 cavalry, 90 guns
Austrian – 22400 infantry, 2000 cavalry, 57 guns

Note
Brigades with 30% casualties will not take part in the battle
The three routed or shaken brigades will have one attempt to rally
If they fail they will not take part in the battle.

11 Baden reoccupy both forward sections of Augsburg
But their shaken infantry brigade fails morale and routs
3 Austrian move to engage hill
4 Austrian send two brigades to contain the garrison

3 Austrian gunners hit 10 Bavarian cavalry
Horsemen rout with 20% casualties
Both supporting brigades (who have 20% casualties) join the rout
Gunners left without any support, also fail morale and join rout

12 Baden gunners hit Austrian square, who pass morale with 10% casualties

Oudinot orders 12 Bavarian to retreat and cover the rout
11 Bavarian gathers shaken cavalry and infantry within Augsburg

Conclusion
The Bavarian attempt to raise the siege has failed
However the Bavarians continue to hold Augsburg
The Bavarians have lost 400 infantry and 200 cavalry
The Austrians have lost 400 infantry

Outcome
The Bavarian relief force will retreat towards Donauworth
11 Bavarian will continue to hold Augsburg
The Austrians will continue with the siege

Battle Summary
The Bavarians should never have attempted to raise the siege
10th corps had too many casualties from the previous fighting
As soon as one brigade lost their morale the whole corps joined the rout
11th corps were unlucky as they attempted the sortie from Augsburg
With the loss of their cavalry they could not leave the  town
The Bavarians lost 600 casualties and have four brigades in rout
The Austrians lost 400 casualties.
