17 March 1813 - Central Germany

The Russians had orders to rest and resupply
The French attack with all four corps was unexpected

The French lost the smaller battle at Friedland
This was no surprise, as they were outnumbered
They were also attacking a strong defensive position.

It was a surprise that they won the larger battle at Kassel
Again they were outnumbered
Worse still they had considerable battle casualties
Their artillery was particularly weak
The two weak corps pinned the Russian centre and left
The 2nd Young Guard corps attacked the Russian left
This was held by the weakest of the three Russian corps
The Guard stormed and broke 2nd Russian corps
The Russians retreated and abandoned Kassel
